EAST MEADOW, N.Y. (FOX 5 NY) - For decades, young girls on Long Island who loved the game of hockey couldn't find their own team.

So Alexis Moed took her experience as a Division I hockey player at Boston College to turn girls hockey clinics into more. She founded the New York Islanders Girls Elite Hockey Program.

The inspiration was to create a program that was a complete package for them: where girls can get their off-ice training, video analysis, academic advising, and college advising all under one roof in one program and not feel they had to play with the boys to have a hockey experience.

New York Islanders Girls Elite Hockey Program was officially established in 2016 offering travel teams for girls ages 8 to 18. In a partnership with the Islanders, the girls train at the team's facility in Eisenhower Park.

The New York Islanders Girls Elite Hockey Program has more 100 girls participating and that'll keep growing. A new sponsorship from Northwell Health gives the program financial support so that girls can have additional ice time for practice without having their parents pay higher tuition and also financial assistance for those families who qualify.
